These videos, in Spanish and in English, are produced to give the viewer a look at domestic violence through the children’s eyes. The video opens with Sonia trying her best to stall leaving school for the day before her brother, Angelo, finds her and convinces her to leave.
When they arrive home, their father is sitting in the truck in their driveway, and their house has been trashed by him. The children hear the arguing and the abuse for a long time. What the adults don’t generally see is how early and how deeply affected by this violence their children are. When Angelo’s mother sees him concentrate on his father’s photo and then look in the mirror trying to see his father in his face, she imagines him turning out to be just like him. Then she realizes that it’s time for her to stop her children from being harmed anymore than they already are.
There is yelling and sounds implying the father destroying the house, so if these are your triggers, I suggest you avoid watching the video.
Moving, and a very effective reply to those who say (or think): “This is just between me and my partner!” It really isn’t, especially if children are involved!
