Vickie L. Evans grew up in her childhood home as a witness of domestic violence. She speaks about the effects growing up in domestic violence on her development into a young woman and how it affected her self-esteem. As she grew older, she herself ended up in emotionally abusive relationships.
As a way to reconcile her past and use it as a way to educate others about domestic violence, she authored Know Your Worth. Also, she is the playwright of A Change is Gonna Come which addresses the misconception of domestic violence demographics. It also speaks on physical, verbal, AND sexual abuse and how it touches the lives of all sections of society.
Vickie also uses the play to touch on the subject of abuse as experienced by women in the church. I appreciate how she clarifies here the correct view of women being submissive to their husbands. It is important to note the submission of wives to their husbands does not mean you submit to their negative and harmful treatment. In the Bible, the husband is exhorted to love his wife as he loves himself and as Christ loves the congregation. If a woman is treated with love and respect by her husband, she will have no issues submitting to her husband, because his actions and words will unfailingly show her that he always takes her needs, comfort, and well-being into consideration. Often times, this submission is incorrectly taught to mean tolerance of everything he does simply because he is the husband. Thank you touching on this topic, Vickie!
