I don’t always play hooky, but when I do, I take my best friend’s dad’s Ferrari, friends in tow, drive into the city and end up….. on a parade float singing Danke Shoen and Twist and Shout? That’s right, mama’s boy misfit-wannabes around the world; rejoice! Ferris shows you all everywhere how it’s done just right. Unless of course, you are like me and you lived with a parent who was an RN….
If lessons in hooky and mayhem are not your thing, then surely you must know of The Karate Kid. The first release came out in 1984, but the second movie released in 1986 featured one of my true loves that I would discover later in life.. and I don’t mean Ralph Macchio! But ladies, if you dug the dorky-cute 80s look, The Karate Kid was definitely for you.
Welcome to When the Beats Strike: My Life in Music 1986, the year Ferris fought a losing battle against my stepmother, the RN in an attempt to make skipping school appealing, a Ferrari was destroyed, and I was bitten by two bugs at once…. which will lead to some interesting music choices to come. Thank you, Ralph Macchio and Gloria Estefan for fueling the obsession, but what an odd combination… Japanese and Latin rhythm? Muevete, mamita! Muevete!
